Latch Board Leave Behind

For the past week, we’ve been in the Internet challenged mountains of West Virginia on a ski trip with Brian’s family.   It was torture and heaven at the same time (no Internet that is, not the vacation part…).   But no Internet meant a lot of QT with the fam…and a lot of time to pass in a little condo with the nugget.   To help keep her amused, we decided to make her a latch board to take with us.  I picked up a board from a craft store and Brian gave it a couple quick coats of polyurethane to make the board a little more smooth and prevent splinters.  Then we picked up a bunch of latches from the hardware store and screwed them on the board.

And note to anyone making a latch board – make sure you’re screws aren’t longer than the board is thick.  We weren’t paying attention and a couple went through the board so we had to use the dremel saw to grind them down.  Juice seems to like the board so far, even though at 20 months she still has a little work to do in the dexterity department.

Oh, and our big plan for using the board to keep Olivia occupied on our trip?  Yeah, we completely forgot to bring it.  Fail.

Movin’ On Up

The time has come…for Juice’s big girl room!  I thought I’d be sad about this – our baby, growing up so fast.  Instead, I’m geeked about decorating a new room!  I’ve been plotting the space in my head for a while now, flip flopping between color schemes and how “mature” I want it to look.  Right now I’ve settled on muted yellows, blues and purples.  And after seeing the mood board I created, I’m kinda thinking I need to steal this look for our master bedroom!

Lay It On Me

Oh Yeah! Fall Pinterest Challenge Time! Oh Yeah!  (said in my best Pauly D voice).  Bust out your mod podge, sewing machines, and power tools, it’s Pinterest Challenge time over at Young House Love.  I’ve been eyeing my pins for weeks, just waiting for this moment to come.  I had some good contenders waiting for their opportunity, all screaming “Pick me!  Pick me!” -

But alas, I settled on another project for Juice like I did with the last couple challenges (here and here).  This time my inspiration was this guy -

This project was awesome for three reasons: (1) look at it, it’s a pillow bed! (2) I already had the fabric and the pillows cost $4.04 each for a project grand total of $16.16 and (3) it was super easy.  For the fabric, I used an old duvet cover that used to be in our master bedroom.  We recently replaced it when we made our annual pilgrimage to IKEA, but I just couldn’t bear to part with the old one because I loved the pattern.  What’s even better is that using the duvet cut back on a ton of sewing.

To start the project, the first thing I did was use the pillows as a measuring stick.  Four pillow fit perfectly on one side of the duvet so the only cut I had to make was about 5 inches past the pillows.

Next, I ripped the seams on each side of the pocket about 8 inches.  Then I folded the fabric on one side of the opening over about 4 inches and sewed the side seems back together (this will make sense in a minute).  Using the pillows as a measuring stick again, I marked three lines that I needed to sew to create individual pockets for the pillows, making sure I sewed over the 4 inches of fabric that I folded over in the last step.  Now I had 4 sections for the pillows and the 4 inches of fabric that I folded over made a pocket for the pillow.

This way I can take the pillows out and wash the cover.  The last step was to hem the other side of the opening and put the pillows in.  Done and done.

Livie seems to like it so far -

Although she was more concerned with finding her bellybutton than enjoying her new bed-

And she’s going to have to fight off Riley who apparently thinks this will make the perfect dog bed -

And in a few weeks I’m sure she’ll be fighting Brian off too.  OK, and maybe me…

So speaking of all things Pinterest, I made this cake for Brian’s birthday this weekend and Oh…My…God…it’s probably the most fantastic thing I’ve ever eaten.  If you’re looking for a good cake recipe, you have got to try this one!

Another Day, Another Door

I’m beginning to think I have a thing for doors.  First, we painted the interior of our back door.  Then we added a peg board to the inside of our linen closet.  Now we’ve moved on to a door in our 2nd floor loft, making it a magnetic chalk board.  We’re hoping to make the loft a family room/play room down the road and thought this project would be fun for Juice (and any future Juice’s).  Here’s a before shot, including the growth chart we made last year -

I started with the magnetic paint, putting on two coats.  Thankfully I tested the door before I used the chalkboard paint because the magnet slid right down the door.  Apparently it’s really important to mix the paint and I left all the important stuff on the bottom of the can.  Two more coats later (of the thickest, heaviest paint ever) the door was magnetic!  The next night I put on two coats of chalkboard paint and it was done.

For Livie, I bought a couple animals at Michael’s and put magnets on the back -

She’s still a little young for the chalk, but she got a couple swipes in -

Sitting back and admiring her work -

Really, she’s more interested in eating it than drawing with it -

After Livie was done playing I made a Halloween themed door…and let’s just say I won’t be selling art any time soon -

Embarrassing…I wish Olivia was old enough for me to blame this on her.

You Spin Me Right Round

It’s official, I’ve found my dream home.  It’s a charming three story house with a cute front porch.  It has a huge living room with a fireplace, four bedrooms (no bathrooms but we can work with that) and beautiful floors.  The best part is, it’s already in our neighborhood.  Actually, it’s already in our house.  Welcome to Livie’s new doll house!

Brian’s mom surprised us with this little gem a couple months ago when she found it at a flea market.  Juice might be a couple years from fully appreciating the glory of this present, but until then the house will be patiently waiting for her in the play room.  What playroom you might ask?  Yeah, we don’t have one yet, but we’ve got grand plans my friend…grand plans…

But back to the doll house.  The only down side to the doll house is the fact that it weighs 10,000 lbs.  In order to enjoy 360 degrees of the house, you’d either have to place the house in the middle of the room or have some serious muscles.  To fix this, I bought this guy -

It’s a swivel wheel meant for computers or TV screens, but it was the perfect thing to make the doll house more functional.  Since the house is rectangular and the wheel is circular (oh yeah, I just dropped a little kindergarten lesson on you), the house was a little too tippy for our liking when we just used the wheel.  To make it more level, we nailed a 1/2″ piece of plywood on both ends of the house -

And then put furniture pads on the bottom of the wood -

This way the house will still move smoothly when you turn it, but not scratch the floor.

Now we can enjoy the doll house from every angle.  From the outside, you could play on the front porch -

Or look through the windows -

Even the roof is charming -

On the inside Livie will be able to play on the first floor -

Or the second floor -

And I might have to steal some decorating ideas, I love the floors and the wallpaper -

I can’t wait to explain to Olivia some day where her fake family goes to the bathroom…

Fab 5: Year One

After my accidental discovery of Off Boulevard’s one year anniversary earlier this week, I started thinking about all the projects we’ve completed over the past year.  Some I’ve loved, some have been a complete bust, and others we’ll enjoy for years to come.  Here’s a rundown of my five favorite projects.

1. Favorite Paint Project

I’d been seeing painted interior doors all over Pinterest and decided to jump on the bandwagon.  So glad I did!  I used my paint crush, Antiguan Sky by Benjamin Moore, and gave our kitchen/laundry room some life.

2. Best Memory

This wasn’t really a project, but it’s hands down my favorite post.  Being able to capture a time line of Juice growing up over the past year is so fun to see.  We might not be able to keep her little, but we’ll have a great way to remember year one.

 3. Favorite Kids Project

Continuing with the kid theme, I’ve done a couple special projects for Juice this year, including fabric blocks (and a second upgraded version), capturing some year one pics, and my favorite, a DIY growth chart.  I love it because (a) it was easy to make and (b) it’s another great memory maker.   Every year we can capture a moment in time and have something to look back on.

4. Biggest Overhaul

This project required the assistance of professionals, with a touch of landscaping by us (and my dad!).  And wow what a difference!  We still have some finishing touches to make (furniture, lattice work, planters), but this space served us well this summer.  Now if only mosquitoes didn’t exist and it wasn’t a thousand degrees all summer…

5. Best Upcycle

Baby-proofing the house proved to be more of a challenge than we thought, especially when it came to installing a baby gate to the second floor stairs.  When we couldn’t find anything that would work, we took matters into our own hands and made a baby gate.  Using a door from the Habitat ReStore and adding a couple hinges and a latch, Juice was officially quarantined to the 1st floor!

So there you have it,  my fab five posts and projects from year one of Off Boulevard.  Now off to work on year two!

Add a Little Crinkle

The day I made Livie her set of fabric blocks, I knew it was only a matter of time before Riley decided they would be her toy as well.  That day arrived recently when I came home from work to discover the blocks strewn about the living room and Riley looking up at me innocently.  The blocks only had a couple little bite marks and small tears, nothing horrible but enough for Riley to have made her point.  It was a good excuse to jazz up the first version of the block, this time trying more of a sensory block.  On two sides I used minky dot fabric, on another two sides I used a crinkle material, and the last two sides were just fabric.  For the crinkle, I used one of Juice’s empty baby wipe bags.  She love’s to play with the wipes when we change her, so I already know she loves the noise.

Instead of cutting 6 4.5″x4.5″ squares for the blocks like I did the first go around, I used 10 blocks this time (6 exterior squares, 2 crinkle squares, 2 muslin squares).  To keep the crinkle material in place, I sandwiched it between the exterior fabric and muslin.

After sewing the blocks with the wrong sides out, I left a small opening to squeeze in the foam block, hand stitching it closed.

Fabric Block v.2 = Success!

Remembering One

Livie’s first birthday has come and gone, but we took some time a few weeks ago to take some pictures to remember it by.  Of course we had to start with her one year measurement on the growth chart we made earlier this year.  Here’s the pic we took when we first made the growth chart, she was 6 months old -

Let’s just say it was a little easier to take her picture when she couldn’t walk.  After two sessions, this was as good as it was going to get capturing her one year picture -

She now stands at at 30.5″ tall, kickin’ it in the 90th percentile.  Our little monster, seriously, her nickname at day care is Monster, is shaping up to be a beast on the basketball court.

Our second photo op was an idea I stole off Pinterest.  I bought wood letters spelling ONE and painted them with some leftover paint.  The goal was to photograph her with each letter individually and make a collage that spells ONE.  When we went to Myrtle Beach we thought the sand would be a great backdrop so we shot the pictures there.  After the challenge we had with the growth chart pics I knew this wasn’t going to go too smoothly, but we ended up with some decent shots -

One a whim, Brian set the letters all together in front of her, and that went a little better -

When we got back from the beach, I wanted to try a couple more shots in the park by us.  Once again, the individual letter pictures didn’t go well, but we did get some good group letter shots.

And while these “posed” shots are great, I think my favorites will always be the 8,000 candid pics we’ve taken the past year.

Couldn’t Have Done It Without You

Finding out you’re going to have your first child is an amazing feeling.  It can also be incredibly overwhelming.  Take for example the baby registry.  You’re suppose to pick out items for something you’ve never done before and there are 8,000 choices for everything.  And everyone has an opinion as to what you absolutely must have and what is a waste of money.  The problem is, everyone tells you something different.  One person tells you their baby screamed every time they put them in a swing.  The next person tells you the only place their child would sleep was in a swing.  Basically it’s a crap shoot.

After a year on the job, we’ve come to adore some baby products.  Here are some small things we couldn’t have lived without the past year.

First up are Seventh Generation Diapers.  When I was pregnant we had a grand plan to use cloth diapers, but that was quickly abandoned after our first couple tries at using them (I know, we give up easily).  Instead, we have come to love Seventh Generation diapers.  They’re free of chlorine, fragrances, latex, and petroleum and Olivia almost never get’s diaper rash.

Then we have BabyGanics baby wipes.  We use these for everything.  Diaper changes, snotty noses, dirty hands, cleaning up after a meal…you get the point.  Livie even loves the crinkling noise the package makes, which is a great distraction when we change her.

Another thing that has a hundred uses is prefold cloth diapers.  We never use them for what they were intended for, but as burp clothes, changing pads, to clean up spills, on and on and on.

When it came time to use bottles, we stuck with Dr. Brown’s.  While they’re a pain to clean since they have so many parts, Juice hardly ever spit up so we considered it worth the effort.  On a side note, we also broke down and bought the Dr. Brown bottle warmer and it was worth every dime for all those 2am feedings.

Then we have our favorite lotions and potions.  I’m a Burt’s Bees girl so I stuck to the same with Livie.  She has pretty sensitive skin and it keeps her skin in pretty good shape.  We also love Boudeaux’s Butt Paste diaper rash ointment.  One of our friends swore by this stuff and gave it to us at our baby shower (thanks Brittany!).

And when it comes time to put Juice to bed, we always play her Sleep Sheep.  While some of the sounds are a little creepy to me (heart beat), the ocean noise puts Juice right to sleep.

We thank you products, for making our first year of parenthood a little bit easier!

Year One

One year ago today, our little girl was born and changed our lives forever.  Everyone told us how fast the time would fly, and oh man were they right!

Happy 1st birthday Olivia!
